Engadget has called Steam for more information about this rule, consisting of why it was brought in. NFT scams do exist, and unless you understand what youre doing, its not difficult to get burned on crypto trading. That stated, Valve does permit individuals to exchange virtual goods for Steam Wallet funds through the neighborhood market, so SpacePirates belief that Steam does not allow items with real-world worth doesnt entirely hold water.

Its unclear the number of video games currently on Steam will be affected. Searching for “NFT” and “crypto” turns up 14 and 64 outcomes respectively. Not all of those necessarily allow real-world trading though. Crypto Mining Simulator, for example, lets you pretend youre mining cryptocurrency, which seems like a barrel of laughs.

Some developers have spoken up about the rule. SpacePirate Games, the studio behind a sci-fi action-adventure title called Age of Rust, said Valve was booting blockchain video games off of Steam “due to the fact that NFTs have worth.” Some puzzles in Age of Rust, which remains in development, will reward players with NFTs as achievements. “Steams viewpoint is that products have value and they do not enable items that can have real-world value on their platform,” SpacePirate stated. The developer plans to release the video game somewhere else.

Steam will no longer permit games that allow NFT (non-fungible token) and cryptocurrency trading through the blockchain. Steams onboarding page for Steamworks partners and users now specifies that they shouldnt publish “applications built on blockchain innovation that concern or enable exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” on Steam.
