LONDON– A work by British street artist Banksy that sensationally self-shredded simply after it cost auction three years ago fetched practically $25.4 million on Thursday– a record for the artist, and near 20 times its pre-shredded cost.
” Love remains in the Bin” was provided by Sothebys in London, with a presale quote of $5.5 million to $8.2 million.
After a 10-minute bidding war including 9 bidders in the saleroom, online and by phone, it offered for 3 times the high estimate to a concealed buyer. The price of $25,383,941 includes an auction-house charge called a buyers premium.
The piece includes a half-shredded canvas in an ornate frame bearing a spray-painted image of a woman reaching for a heart-shaped red balloon.
When it last cost Sothebys in October 2018, the piece was called “Girl With Balloon.” Simply as an anonymous female European purchaser made the winning bid– for $1.4 million– a concealed shredder embedded in the frame by Banksy whirred to life, leaving half the canvas hanging from the frame in strips.
Sothebys got some criticism at the time for failing to spot the surprise shredder. The 2018 buyer chose to go through with the purchase, a decision that was vindicated on Thursday as the works rate skyrocketed.
The work quickly turned into one of Banksys most well-known, and Sothebys sent it on tour to cities including New York and Hong Kong before Thursdays auction.
Auctioneer Oliver Barker joked that he was “terrified” to lower the hammer to end Thursdays sale. There were jitters amongst Sothebys staff to the last that Banksy had another surprise prepared.
Alex Branczik. Sothebys chairman of contemporary and contemporary art, called the shredding “one of the most ingenious minutes of efficiency art this century.”.
” It has been a whirlwind to follow the journey of this now famous piece and to have it back in our midst, using it this evening in the very room it was produced by the artist,” Branczik stated. “Banksy is no complete stranger to making headlines and this newest chapter in his story has caught imaginations across the world– we can just begin to think what may come next.”.
