Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the manufacturers behind Into the Spider-Verse and the writer-directors of The Lego Movie, are bringing their skills to Apple TV Plus. The Afterparty is a new eight-part murder-mystery funny series developed and directed by Miller, with both Lord and Miller working as showrunners and executive manufacturers.
Lord and Miller have another streaming task in the works also. In February 2021, HBO Max revealed it was restoring Lord, Miller, and Bill Lawrences animated show Clone High for the streaming service. Apple already has a successful working relationship with Lawrence, whos a co-creator of its Emmy-winning funny Ted Lasso.
The program stars Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, and Ilana Glazer, among several other comedy stars (and obviously Dave Franco). Plus, stories with equally vague properties– Game Night starts as a film about individuals playing board video games before it gets wacky– have historically allowed for plenty of shocking twists and humorous setups.
The brand-new series “centers on a murder mystery at a high school reunion,” Apple says, with each episode including “a retelling of the same night informed through a different characters point of view, each with its own unique visual style and movie genre to match the tellers character.”
The Afterparty will premiere globally on Apple TV Plus in January 2022.
