In an interview with ESPN, Cuban piggybacked off Doncics comments by stating it was “a massive mistake” especially because the season was condensed to only 72 games, instead of its normal 82-game schedule.
Dallas Mavericks team governor Mark Cuban isnt a fan of the NBAs play-in competition– and neither is his star player.
” I get why the NBA is doing it,” Cuban elaborated. “But if we are going to be innovative because of COVID, we ought to go straight up 1 to 20 and let the bottom 4 play in. This is the year particularly to do it since the 10 video games cut [from the regular 82-game schedule] remained in conference.”
The reason Cuban doesnt like the idea is because of the compressed schedule. The Mavericks are presently the seventh seed in the Western Conference, and if the season were to end today, they would play a one-game playoff against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are currently the 8th seed.
” I get why the NBA is doing it,” Cuban elaborated. If the Mavericks win that game, they would go into the playoffs as the seventh seed. If they lose, they would host the winner of the video game in between the ninth-seeded San Antonio Spurs and 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors in a win-or-go-home matchup. The winner of that game would be the 8th seed in the playoffs.
” In a routine season of 82 games where we arent playing 30-plus video games in 6 weeks, then it may have been OKAY,” Cuban said. “But the compression of a lot of video games into so couple of days makes this a massive error. “If we had actually gone 1 to 16, with the leading 12 in, it still would have been rough, but there would have been more separation in between play-in and the leading 12.”
After the teams loss on Monday, super star Luka Doncic explained his reasoning regarding why he doesnt like it. He said that he does not comprehend the idea of it.
” You play 72 games to get in the playoffs, then maybe you lose two in a row, and youre out of the playoffs. I do not see the point of that,” Doncic said.
Cuban, who is also a part of the leagues board of governors, says that this is a season where groups need to rest high-usage gamers since they “have no choice” and he thinks “that can and will have consequences.”
