Kristin Smart disappearance timeline: What led to an arrest? – Los Angeles Times

The disappearance of Kristin Smart is one of Californias most enduring mysteries.
For much of the time given that she disappeared while walking to her dormitory at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1996, authorities have recognized fellow student Paul Flores as the prime suspect in the case.
Regardless of many examinations, searches and legal procedures, there has not be an arrest in the case. Until Tuesday, when Flores and his father were apprehended.
Here is a timeline of the case:

Flores dad also was jailed Tuesday early morning at his house in Arroyo Grande. The 80-year-old was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of being a device after the reality, prison records reveal.

Detectives with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Department served a search warrant at the Arroyo Grande home of Ruben Flores, the dad of Paul Flores.
April 2021.
Flores was taken into custody by San Luis Obispo County constables officials. In the past, Flores rejected any wrongdoing.

Kristin Smart disappeared 24 years ago.

May 1996
Smart, then 19, of Stockton, disappeared on Memorial Day weekend.
About 8:30 p.m. on May 24, she and three companions left their dormitories, a staggered row of brick and concrete buildings set against a steep incline called Poly Hill.
They got a trip in a truck to a party at an unofficial fraternity home near school. Her buddies did not wish to go to the celebration, so they dropped Smart off a number of blocks away.

Her family continued to push for a resolution of her case.

September 2016.
FBI representatives and constables deputies from San Luis Obispo County spent five days digging up three places on the hillside where Smart was last seen alive. The dig uncovered remains, but they were thought to be of animals and not associated to the case.

Later, Flores invoked his 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination before a grand jury and throughout a civil deposition.
May 2002.
Smart was stated legally dead. But her household promised to get justice for her.
