Former police officer Kim Potter arrested on manslaughter charge in fatal shooting of Daunte Wright – CNBC

Kim Potter, the Minnesota policeman who fatally shot Daunte Wright, was detained Wednesday morning on a charge of second-degree murder, authorities said.

Potters arrest came a day after she resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department and 3 days after her shooting of the 20-year-old Black man

Wrights death, which took place as he got away a police traffic stop, heightened already-high tensions around Minneapolis due to the murder trial of former authorities officer Derek Chauvin for last years killing of George Floyd.

Potter, who served 26 years on the Brooklyn Center force and formerly was president of its police union, has kept a defense lawyer, Earl Gray, according to the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. Gray did not right away react to a demand for remark.

Washington County, Minnesota, district attorney Pete Orput announced that Potter would be criminally charged for Wrights death.

Potter anxiously and repeatedly screamed “Taser!” prior to shooting Wright as he sat in his lorrys driver seat after ducking away from the other officer.

Gray is also representing previous Minneapolis police officer Thomas Lane, one of 2 other ex-officers arranged to be tried independently from Chauvin on lesser charges related to the death of Floyd, who like Wright was black.

She was arrested Wednesday morning at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities said she would be booked into the Hennepin County Jail, which the Washington County district attorneys workplace would submit charges later Wednesday.

Potters Taser is colored brilliant yellow, in contrast to her black Glock 9mm pistol.

Floyds killing by Chauvin sparked nationwide protests over authorities misconduct against minority suspects, and calls for major reform of policing practices.

Authorities said that the investigation of the shooting remains active.

Wrights death has actually led to protests in Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis.
