New York Yankees Aaron Hicks to miss Mondays game in wake of police shooting – ESPN

DUNEDIN, Fla.– New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks took himself out of the lineup for Mondays series opening win versus the Toronto Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in the wake of the discontent in Minneapolis after the authorities shooting of Daunte Wright on Sunday night
Throughout his pregame media schedule, supervisor Aaron Boone said designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton was likewise thinking about sitting the game out, but the slugger ended up playing Monday night in New Yorks 3-1 win.

” With all thats going on in Minneapolis, hes having a hard time right now,” Boone said of Hicks. … I didnt know till late this morning about what had gone on or the news reports around it, so just getting here and attempting to process it all.”
Hicks was the Twins first-round draft pick in 2008 and was the franchises leading minor league possibility prior to making his launching in 2013. I just believe he felt like he would have a difficult time going out there this evening, and probably just believed it was best to keep him out of the lineup,” Boone stated.” I would say that Aarons hurting in a substantial way, and in a way felt it was probably the accountable thing to take himself out in knowing that it was going to be tough for him to be all in mentally in whats a high-stakes, hard job to go out there and carry out for the New York Yankees,” Boone stated.

” With all thats going on in Minneapolis, hes having a tough time right now,” Boone said of Hicks. “Had a discussion in my workplace and he just felt like it was best to not be in the starting lineup tonight.
” I talked to [Giancarlo Stanton] quickly, so well see where that leads,” Boone included. “Talked to [striking coach] Marcus [Thames] a bit. A lot of this has unfolded considering that Ive been here. … I didnt know until late this morning about what had actually gone on or the news reports around it, so just getting here and attempting to process all of it.”
Wright, a 20-year-old Black male, passed away Sunday after a policeman shot him in the residential area of Brooklyn Center throughout a traffic stop.
The Minnesota Twins postponed Mondays video game versus the Boston Red Sox in the wake of the shooting.
Hicks was the Twins first-round draft pick in 2008 and was the franchises leading minor league prospect prior to making his debut in 2013. I think its just been a tough day for him, naturally, and psychological. I just think he felt like he would have a difficult time going out there this evening, and probably simply thought it was best to keep him out of the lineup,” Boone stated.
Hicks, Stanton, Boone and Aaron Judge, became part of the group of more than 100 players, managers and coaches who contributed part of their incomes to The Players Alliance, a group of former and active MLB gamers formed to combat racial inequality.
Stanton and Hicks were also the only two Yankees gamers who knelt throughout the national anthem early last season in the wake of growing social justice issues.
When attending to any criticism of Hicks for making the choice not to play, Boone said his only concern was with his gamers well-being and supporting their decision.
” I would state that Aarons injuring in a substantial way, and in a method felt it was probably the accountable thing to take himself out in understanding that it was going to be hard for him to be all in psychologically in whats a high-stakes, tough task to head out there and carry out for the New York Yankees,” Boone said. “Things that go on in society and in our culture overflows into athletics and these men, rightfully so, have actually gotten increasingly more of a platform to be able to express themselves. And I definitely support their right to do that.”
